Overview
The aim of this activity is to develop students’ ability to observe the built environment with intention during a guided architectural tour. Students benefit by practicing structured, design-informed looking through multiple lenses—social, technological, and aesthetic—so their observations become usable evidence for later precedent analysis and discussion.

In the example for this activity, students take a guided tour of Habitat 67, an architectural work designed by Moshe Safdie for Expo 67 (Montreal).
The activity is structured in three parts:
- Part 1: Preparatory Questionnaire
- After reviewing a video or readings related to the architectural work, students complete a short pre-visit form to draft questions they would like to have answered during the tour.
- Prior to the tour the instructor reviews student questions and gives them feedback to help focus their observations during the activity.
- Make sure to explain to students what “evidence” looks like (a quote from the guide, a measured/located observation, a specific material detail) to improve the quality of reflections.
- Tip: Share the pre-visit form 24–48 hours in advance and ask students to save it on their phone for quick access. Or suggest they bring a paper version.
- Part 2: Tour Visit and Assignment
- Students participate in the guided tour while collecting targeted notes (and photos if permitted)
- Instructor provides feedback (when needed)
- Tip: Consider pairing students during the tour so one focuses on social observations while the other focuses on technological/aesthetic, then they compare.
- Part 3: Post questionnaire response and analysis
- After the tour students complete a post-visit response to one of their questions to consolidate observations, identify patterns, and prepare for follow-up analysis.
- Tip: Reserve 5–10 minutes at the end (or immediately upon return) for students to begin the post-visit form while observations are fresh.
The activity draws on experiential learning, guided observation, and structured reflection to transform a site visit into evidence-based precedent analysis.
Context: a 90-minute guided tour plus 60 minutes travel time (30 minutes before and 30 minutes after), for a total of ~150 minutes within the course schedule.

Instructional Objectives
By the end of this activity, students will be able to:
- identify and document an architectural work using structured prompts organized by social, technological, and aesthetic lenses
- differentiate description from interpretation by pairing specific on-site evidence with design-relevant inferences
- analyze how design decisions support or hinder social experience (e.g., privacy/community, circulation, shared vs. individual space)
- explain construction techniques and comment on advantages and constraints (e.g., repetition vs. variation, assembly/logistics, cost/feasibility, maintenance, performance)
- critique and evaluate key aesthetic outcomes and relate them to form, light, materiality, and composition
- synthesize and create post-visit reflections into transferable takeaways for future precedent/site analyses
