New Forms of Collaborative Learning? Possibilities of Interactions with Generative AI Support Systems and Issues Arising
Abstract: Collaborating in small groups can be effective to for learning. At the same time, groups encounter challenges during collaboration, and work within the learning sciences, especially the field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), has a long-standing tradition of developing and testing computer-based support for collaborative learning. In this interactive webinar, Professor Nikol will first provide a brief overview of the core mechanisms underlying collaborative learning and illustrate why groups benefit from support. Building on previous work that focused on utilizing computer technology to support groups, she will provide some insights into research exploring the use of machine learning models, which fall under the term “generative artificial intelligence” (GenAI) in the context of collaborative learning.
Against this background, we will jointly discuss how generative AI systems may be used to support groups during collaborative learning and explore the roles that GenAI can play during collaboration. She will conclude with an outlook on potential ways forward regarding the design of GenAI support, how this technology can be combined with established types of support for groups, and how we can investigate the benefits of GenAI support and deepen our understanding of its impact on collaboration and learning processes.
About the presenter: Prof. Dr. Nikol Rummel is a research professor and heads the research program Educational Technologies and Artificial Intelligence at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS), where she deals with questions around the dynamic interaction of teachers, learners and supporting technologies. Her research focuses on issues related to the design and technical implementation of digital learning environments and the challenges and opportunities of learning and teaching in digital environments.
