Session S-04 - Build an Active Learning Classroom from Day One: Routines that Foster Community, Inclusion, and Engagement

June 01, 2026 | 3:00 - 4:15 PM Room: E-2021

This hands-on workshop explores how active learning routines can transform classrooms into inclusive, engaging communities where students are prepared to participate, take risks, and learn together. Participants will actively engage in icebreakers that build connection, content-based class openers that prepare students for learning, micro-breaks that reduce cognitive overload, and class-ending classroom assessment techniques that promote reflection and feedback, all of which can be done in approximately 5 minutes. Each strategy is modeled live, allowing participants to experience the learner’s perspective and consider how these approaches might translate to their discipline.
