Emma Tomiuk
Graduate Student
McGill University, Montreal
Computer Science
Emma Tomiuk exemplifies the values of innovation, reflective practice, and ethical leadership in teaching and learning that underpin the SALTISE Student Innovator Award. Through sustained involvement in interdisciplinary research, pedagogical innovation, and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), she has made meaningful contributions to student learning environments.
During her undergraduate studies in cognitive science and computer science, Emma conducted an honours research project applying machine learning to examine motivational profiles and academic performance. This work demonstrated originality, methodological rigor, and a strong grounding in learning sciences, alongside a clear attention to ethical considerations. She communicated this research effectively to diverse audiences, presenting at the McGill Undergraduate Poster Showcase, Cognitive Science Research Day, and the 2024 SALTISE Conference, where she was noted for clarity, responsiveness, and pedagogical awareness.
Currently completing a master’s degree in computer science, Emma is developing and evaluating an embedded ethics initiative (Developed in Harvard) within the discipline. Using a mixed methods approach, she examines how students develop ethical reasoning and confidence in identifying and preventing AI related harms. This work directly advances evidence informed, ethically grounded innovation in higher education.
In addition, Emma played a central role in the implementation of a specification grading pilot in an upper level Neuroethics course. She supported learners, contributed to course design, and conducted SoTL research on the assessment model, presenting outcomes at the 2025 SALTISE Conference.
Across research, teaching, and service, Emma demonstrates intellectual creativity, empathy, and collaborative leadership, making her a highly deserving recipient of the SALTISE Student Innovator Award 2026.
