Dr. Jasmin Chahal is an innovative educator whose sustained application of student centered pedagogy has significantly advanced teaching and learning at McGill University and beyond. Across large enrollment lecture courses and laboratory programs enrolling hundreds of students annually, she designs learning environments promoting deep conceptual understanding, scientific reasoning, and student agency.

A hallmark of Dr. Chahal’s work is her leadership in pedagogical innovation. She has redesigned core laboratory courses to incorporate inquiry driven and course based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), including SEA PHAGES and Tiny Earth models, enabling students to conduct authentic research and contribute to peer reviewed publications. She has also introduced constructive alignment across courses through redesigned assessments explicitly tied to learning outcomes, and has pioneered thoughtful, evidence informed approaches to the use of generative AI in teaching and assessment. This work was adopted by colleagues and recognized through invited national and international talks.

Dr. Chahal’s contributions extend well beyond the classroom. She plays a central leadership role in curriculum development, faculty mentorship, and communities of pedagogical practice, and regularly delivers workshops and presentations on active learning, assessment design, mentorship, and educational technology. Her leadership in national teaching initiatives, including co-founding the first Canadian Tiny Earth Training Program, exemplifies her impact on the broader educational community.
